Color, Or The Journey To Pleasantville And Back

Ever see that movie, "Pleasantville" with Toby McGuire? His family lives in the 50's "Leave it to Beaver" town where everything is black & white until he discovers a whole new world of color. The entire town freaks out as they, one by one, come into color and life. Everything seems so safe and comfortable at first, and then as they slowly change into color, some of them are excited and feel reborn as others become scared and introverted.

What a parallel to real life. So many of us are afraid of color. Why, because it's different? Will it change the mood and feelings we have? Will we regret losing that comfortable, safe environment?

Maybe, but remember, when it comes to our homes, paint is the least expensive way to make a dramatic difference. Whether you're trying to sell your house or just looking for a spruce up, a fresh coat can reap big rewards.

So where do you start? The rule of thumb isn't with the paint; it's with the fabric! What is the color of your couch, comforter or even your throw pillows or rug? Take a scrap piece or even a whole pillow to the paint department. Choose a lot of paint chips that you think might match or even contrast with the fabric. Take them home and lay them out in the room. That way you get a better sense of the nuances of the colors you chose, in the room they will be in.

Next, and this is big, instead of trying to decide what you like best, pick the ones you like LEAST! Most of us have trouble saying what we like about something, but we usually can come up with lots we don't like! Remove the swatches one by one and soon you will be left with just the right one for you.

Afraid? Try just one wall. Call it the accent wall. Don't be scared to go all out. It's just a gallon of paint and if you don't like it, just go over it with something else. Are you on a tight budget? Buy just a quart or many stores sell small testers. Remember, paint generally dries a bit darker than it looks in the can.

Still leery? Call a professional organizer. They can help you make the most of your space in a stylish and colorful way!
